The origins of our organisation, like many other mental health advocacy organisations in the UK, lie in the survivor movement – people who experienced and survived the powerlessness of mental health services, especially in-patient hospital services.
In 1992 a group of local people who had been through the system began to meet to begin the process of ensuring advocacy was available in Leeds for people with poor mental health.
This was the birth of Leeds Mental Health Advocacy Group (LMHAG) and after a decade the service had grown from 2 part time staff and a manager to a team of 10. The name was changed in December 2007 to incorporate and promote our Dementia advocacy services – Advocacy for Mental Health and Dementia.
We currently have a team of 11 staff (majority are part time) including advocates, management and administrative support.
